Comparative techno-economic analysis of electric and steam heating systems
TEO of heating systems. In accordance with the technical and commercial proposal and comparing the estimated costs of steam and electric heating of pipelines and vessels at one of the realised facilities.
Heat calculation. Cost of the heating system (2018).
Calculation of the required power of the electric heating system, selection of the heating cable brand and the cost of the system for each pipeline and tank are specified in the Technical and Commercial Proposal sent together with this comparative analysis
- Calculation of capital expenditure
Total cost of materials:
The cost of equipment and materials of the electric heating system is 6,753,330.54 UAH.
The cost of materials for steam heating is approximately 60% of the cost of electric heating system – 4 051 998,32 UAH.
Total cost of installation work on the system
Cost of installation of electric heating system – 2,363,665.68 UAH (35% of the system cost).
Cost of installation of steam heating system – UAH 3,241,598.66 (80% of the system cost).
Total capital cost of electric heating 9,116,996.22 UAH.
Total capital cost of steam heating 7,293,596.98 UAH.
- Calculation of operating costs
Energy costs:
The design capacity of the electric heating system is 1056.1 kW.
The design capacity of the steam heating system is 1.350 Gcal/h.
Energy consumption for the period:
– Electric heating with regulation – 2,534,592 kWh*year
– steam heating without regulation – 9,720 Gcal/year
Energy cost per year:
– Electric heating – 5 894 700,62 UAH/year (2325,70 UAH/MWh, as of 01 July 2018)
– Steam heating – 18,229,374.00 UAH/year (1875.45 UAH/Gcal, as of 01 July 2018)
Service costs
Repair and maintenance of electric heating system 118 183,28 UAH/year (5% of installation cost)
Repair and maintenance of steam heating system 972,479.60 UAH/year (30% of installation cost)
Total operating costs for electric heating 6,012,883.90 UAH/year.
Total operating costs for steam heating 19,201,853.60 UAH/year.
Final comparative table of costs
Capital expenditures, UAH
materials installation total
Electric heating: 2 363 665,68 + 2 363 665,68 = 9 116 996,22 UAH.
Steam heating: 4 051 998,32 + 3 241 598,66 = 7 293 596,98 UAH.
Operating costs, UAH/year
energy service total
Electric heating: 5 894 700,62 + 118 183,28 = 6 012 883,90 UAH.
Steam heating: 18 229 374,00 + 972 479,60 = 19 201 853,60 UAH.
It follows that with large capital expenditures for electric heating, due to annual savings of 11 365 570,46 UAH on operating costs, and after 10 years, the savings in case of installation of electric heating system will be 130 066 297,76 UAH (we do not take into account the annual increase in the cost of electricity and heat).
Notes:
In addition, the following points must be taken into account in the steam heating costs:
– The state of saturated vapour is very unstable: even small changes in pressure and temperature lead to condensation of part of the vapour or, on the contrary, to evaporation of water droplets present in the saturated vapour;
– Difficulty in regulating the heat output of heating devices, which ultimately leads to fuel overconsumption;
– low durability of pipelines due to increased corrosion of internal surfaces caused by moist air during periods of steam supply interruption;
– frequent hydraulic shocks from the counter movement of associated condensate in upstream steam lines.
